Uncommon and Rare Crystals and Gemstones

While quartz of all colors is quite abundant, certain types of naturally occurring crystal quartz gemstones are scarce and very hard to find. With the large growth of the use of crystals and gemstones for metaphysical and healing purposes the most rare and uncommon are snatched up quickly, thus they become even more precious and elusive.  Those who are particular and want the full power that gemstones and crystals have to offer, prefer that their crystals and gemstones not be man made, thus, they seek out only those that are formed within the Earth or near the Earths surface. One could hardly argue with the idea that a man made, or “manufactured” stone would not hold the same vibrational energy as those that are created naturally, over time within their natural habitat. More than a few types of naturally occurring clear crystal quartz gemstones are highly prized for their scarcity. Primarily these are stones that have grown with unusual inclusions inside the stone. Rainbow crystals, or those that have a naturally occurring prism within, were once abundant; they have become much more difficult to purchase as they have become more popular. Some rutilated crystal quartz gemstones hold a very high premium and are considered to be very rare. Rutilization simply means that the quartz was formed with another element or mineral contained inside and while this occurrence can be common, some are very unusual. They can be quite spectacular and some of the more exceptional, sphere shaped pieces can run into the thousands of dollars per stone. Platinum, gold, silver, brass and tourmaline inclusions within crystal quartz gemstones are some of the most difficult to find when they are large, high quality, colorless stones, and a piece with these types of irregularities can cost anywhere from two thousand dollars to twenty dollars depending on the size and shape of them. Most of these precious crystals are found in Brazil but they may also be found in the United States, Australia, Madagascar and Pakistan.

A few other gemstones have always been difficult to acquire, even before the wide spread metaphysical revolution which occurred in the last decade. For instance Alexandrite is considered a very rare gemstone. It is so rare that it is one of the most valuable stones to obtain. Its chemical composition does not allow it to produce in the Earth in large quantities, thus, high quality pieces are very limited. Alexandirite also changes color, which makes it very unusual and captivating as it is the only gemstone to do so. In natural daylight the gemstone will appear green or a deep blue/green, but in incandescent or unnatural light, the stone will change to a reddish purple hue, or raspberry shade. The more distinct and obvious the color change the higher the price of the gemstone. High quality Alexandirite is mostly found in Russia and a small area of Brazil. Another very rare gemstone which is hard to come by in large sizes is Tsavorite, or green garnet. This gemstone is known for its exceptional and startling brilliance, however, it is extremely sparse in sizes exceeding two carats. A Tsavorite over two carats in size would be quite costly. Another magnificent and very rare gemstone is Paraiba Tourmaline. This stone displays an exceptionally stunning shade of turquoise that is a wonder to behold. Paraiba can also display shades of purple, green, sky blue, indigo and purplish blue depending upon the content of copper and manganese the individual stone contains. Due to its rarity, even small quantities and sizes, those that are even less than a carat are very expensive. Other extremely rare gems are deemed so because they cannot be found in mines any longer and their supply has run out; some of these include: Benitoite, Red Beryl, Hauyne, Painite, Musgravite, Taaffeite, Jeremejeveite, Majorite, Poudretteite, Grandideirite and Serendibite. Each of these very rare gemstones are very difficult to find anywhere in the world and all hold extraordinarily high prices and value when they can be obtained.
